Bringing the shopping home #LDWeek2020

We are all missing the freedom of popping to the shops during lockdown, but for one person we support in particular in Lincolnshire, a visit to the local charity shop really meant a lot.

Staff at the learning disability service in Bourne, Lincolnshire, wanted to come up with a way to make this much-desired shopping trip a possibility, even in current circumstances. Taking initiative and a lot of heart, the Ambient team came together and brewed up the fantastic idea of setting up an at-home shopping experience.

They began bringing in items and trinkets to “sell”, and kept this up for a few weeks, until the team had a market stall’s worth of goodies.

The staff organised a pop-up shop in the sunny garden for all of the tenants to enjoy. Making it as real as possible, they priced the items, used a till and printed receipts. There was even a shop assistant on hand to help with customer queries!

It was an amazing success. Service users had an incredible time, and began asking for another to be organised, before the first shopping trip had even finished.

Off of this feedback, the Ambient team in Lincolnshire are going to make these pop-up shopping trips more frequent, and continue bringing in items for tenants to “purchase”. And even as the sun tucks itself away for June (we’d expect nothing less), there are plans to bring the shopping experience indoors, too.
